Doors & Windows Stick

Problems Caused By A Wet Foundation: Doors & Windows Stick

Doors are more prone to sticking during the summer months, when relative humidity is high. As a result of the moisture, the wood expands, causing your doors to become too tightly fitted in their frames. In the winter, humidity levels are typically lower than in the summer because cooler air cannot hold as much moisture as warmer air.

What is causing my doors to become stuck in the closed position?

Door hinges that have been improperly installed or that have sagged can cause your door to stick open or close in an unexpected manner. What happens when the screws in the hinges become loose, causing the door to sag to one side, is what we call lopsidedness (this will commonly happen in homes with children who love to hang off the door handles). This is a problem with a relatively simple solution.

Is it possible that squeaking doors are indicative of a problem with the foundation?

Foundations that are upheaving are characterized by squeaking doors and windows, as well as warped and twisted hallways, among other things. Large cracks in the walls and floor of the foundation may be visible if you take a look around in your crawl space. These cracks must be repaired immediately.

What is it that is causing my windows to become stuck?

Dust, dirt, and pollen may have accumulated in the tracks over time, which is a common cause of sticking windows in older vehicles. Taking care of the accumulated debris and lubricating the tracks on your window sashes will allow them to glide open and closed smoothly once again.

What is the most effective method of repairing a sticky window?

Regular Vaseline has been used to lubricate the tracks, which has proven to be the most effective method I've found for correcting this problem. To begin, use a paper towel to wipe away any dust or debris from the tracks before dipping a paper towel into the Vaseline mixture. As much as possible, raise the sash and use a light coat of paint to coat both the lower and upper tracks of the window. When you've finished with the upper track, close the window and repeat the process with the lower track.

What is the most effective method of repairing a window that won't completely close?

It may be sufficient to simply lift and push the window and the area around the lock to restore it to its original position if it has become misaligned as a result of a shifting foundation. It is also possible that other quick fixes, such as lubricating or cleaning the sliding track, will be sufficient.
